The Munich Years and the Berlin Shift

Benno Berneis began his formal training in 1902 at the Munich Malschule, studying under Moritz Heymann. It was here that the foundations of his impressionist style were laid. By 1906, he had moved to Berlin, a city that would define the middle of his career. His presence in the capital was felt quickly; by December of that same year, he was part of the Winter Exhibition of the Berlin Secession. His work appeared alongside that of Henri Matisse in Paul Cassirer's Kunstsalon in 1909, and later, in 1914, he exhibited with the sculptor August Gaul.

His involvement in the Berlin art scene was not merely as a participant but as a builder. He was a co-founder of the Freie Secession, working alongside Max Liebermann, and eventually served on the group's board. His life was marked by this active engagement with the evolving circles of German modernism.

      The Weight of War

The trajectory of his life changed with the onset of the First World War. He initially served in a Bavarian Train Department, but the pull of the front lines led him to volunteer for the Fliegertruppe in mid-1915 after his promotion to Leutnant. His duties shifted to the Westfront, where he was tasked with the reconnaissance of enemy artillery positions. This period of service ended abruptly in an aerial combat over Saint-Souplet, France. He died on 8 August 1916 and was buried at the German soldier cemetery Mont-Saint-Remy in the Ardennes.

      A Family Legacy

Berneis was the only son of Albert Berneis and Betty Neubauer. His father, Albert, was a factory owner who had co-founded the "Schuhfabrik B. Berneis" in 1875 with his brother Louis. This family connection to industry provided a backdrop to a life dedicated to the brush and the canvas. Today, his history and letters are preserved in an archive maintained by his grandson, Michael Berneis.
