      The Vienna Years

Karl Borschke spent his life within the streets of Vienna. He arrived at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1904, beginning a long period of study that would last until 1911. During those years, he sat in studios under the guidance of Christian Griepenkerl, Siegmund L'Allemand, and Rudolf Bacher. His hands learned the weight of oil and the texture of canvas through this formal training. By 1931, his presence in the local art scene was solidified when he became a member of the Vienna House of Artists.

His work often moved through the currents of Modern Art. In 1930, he produced At the source of life (An der Quelle des Lebens), an oil on canvas that measures 126 x 109,2 cm. This piece remains in the collection of the Belvedere in Vienna. It is a work that carries his signature in the lower right corner.

      Olympic Recognition

The year 1936 brought a specific kind of scrutiny to his practice. His work was selected for the painting event during the art competition at the Summer Olympics. This involvement placed his vision alongside the competitive spirit of the games. He was a painter and an illustrator, working with a focus that led him from the academy to the international stage of the Olympics.

His life in Vienna came to an end in 1941. He left behind a body of work that reflects the technical discipline of his academic years and the shifting styles of the early twentieth century.
