A neo-Conceptualist known for Playboys. Discover the provocative works of Lutz Bacher today.
1943 - 2019, United States
Lutz Bacher was an American artist whose body of work has been described as eclectic, rough, open-ended, and disturbing. Working across a variety of formats, including videotapes, photographs, and mixed media, Bacher incorporated elements from personal artifacts, found objects, and popular culture. Her practice frequently addressed questions of identity as expressed through the human body and sexuality. Much of her work examined the intersections of masculinity, violence, and power, often overturning images designed for male pleasure to reveal the exploitation of the female body.
Her early photographic work includes the 1975 series Men at War, which utilized a single image of American sailors on a beach, and the 1986 Sex with Strangers series, which combined found pornographic images with captions written in the style of scientific study. In the late 1980s, Bacher transitioned into video art, producing time-based works such as Huge Uterus (1989), which documented a surgical procedure to remove fibroid tumors from her uterus. Other notable works include the installation Closed Circuit (1997-2000), which utilized a closed-circuit camera to transmit a live feed of surveillance footage into a gallery.
Throughout a career spanning over four decades, Bacher's work was featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions globally. Her work has been exhibited at several prominent institutions, including:
Bacher was represented by Pat Hearn of Pat Hearn Gallery in New York City beginning in 1993. In 2002, she received the Anonymous Was a Woman award, and her work was included in the 2012 Whitney Biennial. Her oeuvre has been the subject of a retrospective and a museum survey at MoMA PS1, and her work is held in various collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City.
