The Life and Travels of François Ferrière

Born in Geneva, Switzerland, François Ferrière was the son of Jean-Claude Ferrière, a master watchmaker. His artistic journey began at the age of twelve when he entered the École publique de dessin in Geneva, where he studied under Jean-Étienne Liotard. Seeking further refinement, he traveled to Paris to train at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture under Joseph-Marie Vien until 1770. Upon returning to Geneva, he dedicated himself to the restoration of seventy paintings at the Bibliothèque de Genève and served as a teacher at the École de dessin.

The political upheaval of the Revolution prompted Ferrière to flee to England, where he gained recognition as a miniature portrait painter. His work for the royal family and his regular exhibitions at the Royal Academy in London established his reputation. In 1804, he relocated to Saint-Pétersbourg, painting portraits of several members of the imperial family and undertaking the restoration of master paintings. After a period in Moscow, where a fire resulted in the loss of his fortune and collections, he returned to England before finally returning to Switzerland in 1821.
