Born in Poppenroth, Germany, John Eckstein was a man of many disciplines, a polymath whose hands were as comfortable with the chisel as they were with the engraver's tool. The son of Conrad Eckstein, a skilled woodcarver and cabinet-maker, his early years were shaped by the tactile realities of craftsmanship. This technical foundation allowed him to move through the artistic circles of Europe with a rare fluidity, transitioning from the delicate precision of engraving to the monumental presence of sculpture. His training began at the Nuremberg Academy of Arts under Preissler, providing the classical grounding that would support a career spanning several nations.

After a period in London, where he worked on reliefs for the monument to Roger Townshend in Westminster Abbey, he found himself at the Prussian court. Invited by Frederick the Great, Eckstein became the king's principal sculptor, executing works at Potsdam and Sans Souci. His influence reached into the realm of fine porcelain and commemorative art, including modeling for the Berlin porcelain factory and the creation of wax busts.
