A View from the Window Edgard Tytgat spent much of his life looking through glass. Born in Brussels, he spent his early years in Bruges before his family moved to the capital in 1888. He once tried his hand at being a clock-maker, but the precision of gears and springs did not hold him. Instead, he sought the Brussels Fine Arts Academy in 1897. His gaze eventually settled on the world outside his own home. He often spoke of his love fo
r windows, noting that it was from an upstairs window that he captured the impressions of the world. He watched the light, the fairs, and the children through that frame, translating the movement of life into something quiet and strange. His work carries a certain weight of memory.
