Abbey Williams Hill: Life & Legacy Early Life and Education Born: Abby Rhoda Williams on September 25, 1861, in Grinnell, Iowa. She received early artistic encouragement from her parents and aunt Ruth Hubbard. Hill studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) with Henry F. Spread in 1883. Furthered her education at the Art Students' League in New York, studying under William Merritt Chase. She taught at a girl
s’ seminary in Quebec before returning to pursue art more seriously. Career and Artistic Development In 1888, she married Frank R. Hill, a homeopathic doctor, and they settled in Tacoma, Washington. The early 1900s brought commissions from the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway to paint landscapes promoting tourism in the Northwestern United States.
