Stephen Bone bol synom uznávaného umelca sira Muirheada Bone a spisovateľky Gertrude Heleny Dodd. Toto rodinné umelecké prostredie zásadne ovplyvnilo jeho raný rozvoj.

Vojenský umelec a príspevok počas II. svetovej vojny
S vypuknutím druhej svetovej vojny sa Bone prihlásil ako dôstojník do Záliev Camouflage Establishment v rámci civilnej obrany.
V roku 1943 ho Výbor pre poradcov vojsk (War Artists' Advisory Committee) vymenoval za plateného umelca na plný úväzok, špecializujúceho sa na témy morskej admirality. Túto rolu predtým zastával jeho otec, Muirhead Bone, no Stephen ju prevzal po smrti ich syna Gavina.

Smrť: Stephen Bone zomrel na rakovinu 15. septembra 1958 v nemocnici St Bartholomew's v Londýne.
