      Early Life, Family and Training

Giuseppe Cerrina enters the world on October 6, 1882, in Murazzano, Italy. He is the first of nine children in his family. His early years are defined by the discipline of sound rather than color. At a very young age, he is introduced to the study of music. He spends his formative moments practicing the natural diatonic scale on violin strings, a rhythmic foundation that precedes his visual pursuits.

The intellectual path takes him away from the musical strings and toward the academic rigor of the university. In 1901, at the age of nineteen, he enrolls at the University of Turin. He spends the next several years immersed in the study of letters and philosophy. By 1905, he has completed his studies, graduating with a degree in Letters and Philosophy.

      Career in Teaching and Art

The transition from music to the visual arts marks a definitive shift in his professional life. After completing his studies in Letters and Philosophy, he enters a long, itinerant career as a teacher within various high schools. This academic path eventually leads him to Milan, where he secures a position at the Liceo Classico Berchet. While his days are occupied by teaching, his creative output begins to find its footing in the public eye.

His first solo exhibition takes place in 1906 in Pallanza. This early milestone sets the stage for a series of exhibitions that would define his presence in the Milanese art scene. By the 1930s, his presence in the city's galleries is established through several significant solo shows. He exhibits at the Galleria Gussoni in 1934, followed by a presentation at Casa d'Artisti in 1936. The momentum continues into 1938 with a solo exhibition at the Galleria Gianferrari.

      Exhibitions and Artistic Recognition

The trajectory of Cerrina's public presence accelerates through the major institutional venues of Italy. He secures a recurring presence at the Rome Quadriennale, exhibiting in its first five editions. His involvement spans decades, with documented appearances in 1931, 1935, 1939, 1943, and 1948. These exhibitions place his work alongside the evolving currents of Italian modernism. Beyond Rome, his canvases reach the Biennali veneziane, cementing his standing within the national art circuit.

The late 1920s and early 1930s mark a period of intense exhibition activity. Between December 22, 1929, and January 22, 1930, he holds a solo exhibition at the Bottega d'Arte del Benaco in Riva del Garda. This momentum continues into 1931 with an exhibition at the Promotrice di Torino. His recognition extends into the realm of sacred art, where he receives the Gold Medal of the Presidency of the Senate at the IV Biennale of Sacred Art in Agelicum, Milan.

His later years see his work integrated into significant collections and retrospective settings. His paintings find a home in the Fondazione Cariplo collections. In the final years of his life, his presence is noted at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan during the "50 anni d'arte" exhibition.

      Technique and Artistic Style

Cerrina focuses his gaze on the Piedmontese landscapes, translating the terrain of his home into structured compositions. His early approach relies on the Divisionist method, utilizing broken color to build form and light. This technical foundation shifts as he absorbs the lessons of Carrà, moving toward a more defined sense of space and volume. The transition marks a departure from purely optical color mixing toward a more deliberate, structural way of seeing the world.

The resulting canvases possess a certain mystical severity. He avoids excessive ornamentation, opting instead for a sober brushstroke that carries a hidden lyrical fervor. This restraint does not diminish the emotional weight of the work; rather, the intensity emerges from the tension between his disciplined application of paint and the spiritual undertones of the subject matter. The brushwork remains controlled, yet it vibrates with an internal energy that defines his mature period.

      Later Years and Death

The final chapter of Cerrina's life finds him in Milan, a city that had long been a central hub for his professional engagements. In 1959, he remains active within the local art scene, appearing at the 50 anni d'arte exhibition held in Milan. This presence marks his final public intersection with the contemporary art discourse of the time. He dies in Milan on April 1, 1959.

Memory of his work persists through the decades following his passing. In 1973, a posthumous exhibition brings his canvases back into the public eye at the Galleria Il Diamante in Milan. The recognition of his legacy continues into the next decade, as a second posthumous exhibition is held in his birthplace of Murazzano in 1982.
