      A Venetian Beginning

Born in Venice towards the end of the 17th century, Vincenzo Damini learned the language of color and light under the guidance of Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini. This mentorship shaped his early years and eventually led him away from the familiar canals of his home toward the northern reaches of Europe. Around 1720, he accompanied his teacher to England, a move that would define much of his professional life and introduce his hand to English patrons and sacred spaces.

His time in England was marked by a variety of commissions that required both technical skill and adaptability. He worked on large-scale religious projects, such as the wall paintings of four bishops in the north transept of Lincoln Cathedral, where he worked alongside his assistant, Giles Hussey. His ability to handle different mediums was evident in his work on the Ascension fresco in the chancel and apse of St Peter-at-Arches in Lincoln, a project for which an oil modello survives today.

      Works and Travels

Damini's career was characterized by a movement between the grand decorative schemes of London and the religious traditions of Italy. His presence in England left a physical mark on the architecture of the time, including decorative paintings for a room designed by James Gibbs in Henrietta Street, London. These works, now preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, offer a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the early 18th century.

His professional life was not without its personal complications. After returning to Italy in 1730, he traveled with Giles Hussey, but the two men parted ways in Bologna under circumstances that left Hussey without his belongings. By 1737, Damini had settled in L'Aquila, in Abruzzo, where he continued to produce significant religious works.

His output during this period included:

      • An altarpiece for the church of the monastery of San Giuliano
      • Il battesimo di Gesù (1740)
      • San Tommaso d'Aquino incatena l'eresia (1739)
      • Carlo d'Angiò ai piedi della Vergine e San Tommaso d'Aquino (1741)

      Final Years in Abruzzo

The later years of Damini's life were spent in L'Aquila. The works he produced there, many of which are held in the Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo, show a painter deeply engaged with the spiritual demands of his commissions. He remained active in the region until his death in L'Aquila around 1749. His legacy remains tied to the specific spaces he decorated, from the quiet corners of English cathedrals to the altars of Italian monasteries.
