      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1864, Alfred John Keene grew up in a household deeply connected to the visual arts and the developing technology of photography. He was the fourth son of Richard Keene, a photographer who published the Derby Telegraph. This environment of imagery and documentation likely shaped his early surroundings. He was part of a family of creators, including his brother William Caxton Keene, a watercolourist, and his brother Charles Barrow Keene, a photographer.

Known affectionately as "Jack" to those close to him, Alfred John Keene sought formal instruction to refine his natural inclinations. He spent much of his youth developing his technical skills at the Derby Central School of Art. His training there was a long and steady process, lasting from 1878 until 1895. These years of study provided the foundation for his later life as a British watercolour artist working in Derby.

Professional Life and the Derby Sketching Club

After the passing of his father, Richard, Alfred stepped into the family business alongside his brother, Charles. While he was deeply rooted in the practicalities of managing the family's affairs, his heart remained with the art of the watercolour. He lived and worked in Derby, a town that became the backdrop for much of his creative life. His commitment to the local art community was more than just a personal interest; it was a way of life that helped shape the local scene.

In 1887, Alfred became a founding member of the Derby Sketching Club. He helped establish this group alongside F Booty, William Swindell, George Thompson, Charles Terry, and Frank Timms. These men gathered to share their craft and support one another's development. The club became a steady presence in the community, and Alfred eventually took on the responsibility of serving as its president. The group he helped build was so resilient that it continues to meet to this day.
