A life shaped by family and Rome

Aubin Vouet lived within the close circles of the French painting tradition. He was the son of Laurent Vouet and the younger brother of Simon Vouet, both of whom worked as painters. His path followed his brother's to Rome, arriving there roughly six years after Simon had established himself. During the years around 1619 and 1620, the two brothers lived together on Vicolo di San Silvestro and were received into the Stati delle Anime.

In the streets of Rome, Aubin's brush began to reflect the heavy shadows and sharp contrasts of the Caravaggisti. His early work, such as David Holding Goliath's Head, shows the influence of Caravaggio. He moved through a circle of artists that included Guido Reni, Nicolas Régnier, and Domenico Fetti. While his brother remained in Italy for a longer period, Aubin returned to France, eventually finding a place as a painter in ordinary to Louis XIII in 1621.

      The brush and the workshop

Aubin's hand worked alongside many others in the Parisian landscape. He was active within his brother Simon's school, sharing the studio space with figures like François Tortebat, Michel Dorigny, and Michel Corneille l'Ancien. His later compositions often mirrored the way Simon arranged figures, using bright colors on draped forms to create a sense of movement. He frequently used a technique where figures were placed in curves or triangles, with one person raised above another to guide the eye.

His output included several notable religious works that occupied large spaces:

      • The Brazen Serpent (c. 1630), located in the musée des Augustins, Toulouse.
      • The Discovery of the True Cross (c. 1630), also in Toulouse.
      • The Death of Ananias and Saphira (1632), held at the musée des beaux-arts de Rouen.
      • The Centurion Cornelius Kneeling Before Saint Peter (1639), found in the chapelle Saint-Pierre, cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris.

A lasting presence in French art

By 1634, Aubin was contributing to the decoration of the chapel in the Château-Vieux at Saint-Germain-en-Laye. His work helped maintain the momentum of the style his brother brought back from Italy to France. Even when students like Jean Senelle completed certain large canvases, such as those for the chapelle des Pénitents noirs in Toulouse, the foundation of the composition remained rooted in Aubin's training and vision.

He died in 1641, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the transition of French painting from the older Mannerist traditions toward the more dynamic Baroque era. His life was defined by these connections—to his father, to his brother, and to the specific light and shadow he encountered in Rome.
