      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1758 in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, France, the man who would become known as Augustin Dubourg began his life under the name Georges Nicolas Toussaint Augustin. He was the firstborn son of Nicolas Augustin and Marie-Françoise Guillaume. His upbringing was shaped by a family deeply connected to the arts, as he was the elder brother of Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Augustin. Because his younger brother would eventually achieve great fame as a miniaturist, Augustin Dubourg chose to adopt a different name. He took the name Dubourg, meaning "from the suburbs," to ensure his own identity remained distinct from his sibling's growing reputation. This choice was a quiet struggle to claim his own space in a world that often misattributed his hand to his brother's.

His personal life was marked by the establishment of his own household and lineage. In 1778, he traveled to Vesoul, where he married Jeanne Forestier. This union brought forth a son, Charles-Henri, who was born in 1779. The family's artistic legacy continued through the next generation, as Charles-Henri followed in his father's footsteps. The young man practiced his craft under several different names, including Augustin fils, Augustin neveu, and Augustin jeune, continuing the complex web of identities that had defined his father's life.

      Periods of Activity and Residence

The life of the artist was marked by a steady movement through the various provinces of France, as he sought his place within the shifting landscape of the late eighteenth century. Following his marriage in Vesoul in 1778, his path led him toward Dijon, where he resided from 1779 until 1784. During these years, his presence was felt in the regional centers, including a stay in Lyon in 1783. By 1789, he had found himself in Rouen, a city that would host him before his eventual return to the capital.

Paris became the central stage for his professional ambitions. In 1791, he sought recognition by exhibiting at the Artistes Libres in the Rue de Clery. This period of his life was defined by a persistent effort to establish his own name, often working under the pseudonym Augustin Dubourg to distinguish his hand from that of his brother. His presence in the great exhibitions of the era was notable, as he participated in the Salon Exhibitions of 1793, 1798, and 1800.

His travels and exhibitions reflect a man navigating the complexities of his time, moving between the quietude of provincial life and the competitive atmosphere of the Parisian salons. His career reached its final chapter in Paris, where he remained active until his passing around 1800.

      Technique and Artistic Style

As a painter dedicated to the delicate art of the miniature, he worked with a precision that demanded great patience. He favored the use of watercolour on ivory, a medium that allowed for a luminous quality in the skin tones and fine details of his subjects. This choice of material required a steady hand and a keen eye for the subtle shifts of light, as the smooth surface of the ivory would catch the glow of the room and bring the small portraits to life.

His hand was so skilled in this intimate format that his identity was often obscured by the shadow of his own kin. Because he sought to establish a name separate from his younger brother, Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Augustin, he adopted the pseudonym Augustin Dubourg. This effort to claim his own artistic space was complicated by the fact that his works were frequently misattributed to his famous brother. The similarity in their talent meant that many of his compositions were attributed to the younger Augustin, leaving his own distinct hand to be rediscovered by those who looked closely at the brushwork.
