      A Life in the Landscape

Born in Turin in 1835, Carlo Pittara lived a life defined by the shifting light of the Italian countryside and the quiet rhythms of rural existence. His early training began at the Accademia Albertina under Giuseppe Camino, but his artistic gaze soon wandered far beyond the borders of his home. In 1856, he sought new perspectives in Geneva, studying the animalist techniques of Charles Humbert. This period of formal instruction provided the foundation for a career that would eventually find its heart in the pastoral scenes of the Canavese region.

The movement of his life followed a path through some of Europe's most significant artistic hubs. Between 1858 and 1860, Paris offered him a direct encounter with the works of Camille Corot and Charles Jacque, introducing him to the sensibilities of the Barbizon school. After time spent in Rome, he returned to the landscapes near Rivara. It was here that he gathered a circle of painters who met during the summer months to work en plein aire. This group, later identified as the Scuola di Rivara, shared a commitment to capturing the natural world through both Romantic and Realistic lenses.

The Pursuit of the Natural World

Pittara’s subject matter remained deeply rooted in the earth. He possessed a particular affinity for animals, rivers, and the steady labor of peasants. His canvases often depicted the quiet dignity of rural life, from the movement of cattle to the stillness of a watering hole. In his later years, particularly during winters spent in Paris, his brushwork began to absorb the subtle influences of Impressionism, softening the edges of his earlier, more structured compositions.

His repertoire included a variety of scenes that reflected his surroundings:

      • Pastoral landscapes and river scenes
      • Studies of animals and livestock
      • Portraits of peasants engaged in daily work
      • Atmospheric studies of the Italian and French countryside

While some later observers debated the exact hierarchy of leadership within his group of painters, Pittara’s role as a central figure in the Rivara circle remained significant. He was an artist who sought beauty in the mundane, finding it in a hunting camp or a simple harvest. His work appeared frequently at the Turin Promoter, and even received commissions from figures such as Vittorio Emanuele II for works like A hunting camp.

      An End in Rivara

The final decade of his life saw a continued dialogue between his Italian roots and his French influences. Despite the shifts in style that occurred as he aged, his dedication to the landscape remained constant. He passed away in Rivara in 1891, leaving behind a body of work that captured a specific era of Piedmontese painting. Though he faced periods of being overlooked by the broader art historical narrative, the rediscovery of his canvases in the mid-twentieth century brought his sincere, nature-focused vision back to light.
