A Presence in Girona
The sculptor Francesc Generes arrived in Girona during the final years of the seventeenth century. Between 1674 and 1680, his hands worked within the city, leaving behind traces of his movement through the local churches. Born in Manresa, he brought a specific way of shaping form that settled into the stone and wood of the region.
His work is tied to the heavy, detailed language of Baroque sculpture. This style demanded a certain weight and drama, focusing on the physical presence of figures within sacred spaces. He did not merely decorate; he built structures of devotion that occupied the air around them.
The Work in Stone and Wood
Much of what remains of his hand can be found in the altarpieces that define the religious architecture of the time. These pieces, known as retaule, were central to the liturgical life of the community. His efforts are documented in specific locations:
- The Retaule de Sant Benet de Sant Pere de Galligans.
- The Retaule de la capella dels Desemparats, located within the church of Sant Feliu de Girona.
In these works, the focus remains on the tactile nature of the material. The carvings in the chapel of the Desemparats show a commitment to the structural demands of the Baroque period. He worked with the light and shadow that fall across carved surfaces, ensuring that the figures held their place within the architectural setting.
A Legacy in the Girona Art Museum
The traces of his career are preserved where the history of Catalonia is kept. The Girona Art Museum holds pieces that connect his era to the broader movement of the region. Through these objects, the physical labor of a sculptor from Manresa remains visible to those who look closely at the carved details of the past.
