      Early Life, Family and Training

Frederick Davenport Bates was born in 1867 in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester. He grew up in a household where his father, Peter Bates, worked as a corn dealer and his mother, Mary Rawstron, helped raise him alongside his four older sisters: Annie, Mary, Emily, and Elizabeth. The family moved between Stockport and Manchester during his early years, eventually settling in a house on Wellington Road South. His path toward art began not in a studio, but through the precise, technical work of a draughtsman. He served an apprenticeship with Hetherington & Sons, a firm of engineers in Manchester that manufactured machine tools and textile machinery. This early training in accuracy and line work provided a foundation for the sketches he would later produce.

By the age of 21, he left the world of engineering behind to pursue a career as a painter. This ambition took him away from the industrial landscape of Manchester and toward the studios of Europe. He sought formal instruction at the Academie Julian in Paris, where he studied under Adolphe William Bouguereau, Tony Robert-Fleury, and Gabriel Ferrier. His education continued in Antwerp at the Belgian Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked under Albrecht de Vriendt and Pierre Jan Van de Ouderaa. These years of study in Paris and Belgium shaped the technical discipline he brought to his later subjects.

      Travels and Artistic Interests

His training took him far from the industrial landscape of Manchester. After his early studies, he moved through the art schools of Europe, spending time in Paris and Antwerp. In Antwerp, he studied under Albrecht de Vriendt and Pierre Jan Van de Ouderaa. These years of formal instruction provided the foundation for a life spent observing life in distant places. He eventually moved beyond the European academies to travel through the Middle East, North Africa, and the Holy Land.

These travels shaped the subjects he chose to paint. He spent much of his time looking at the people and light of the East. His canvases often captured the quietude of North African life or the specific atmosphere of Ottoman cities. He focused on the daily rhythms of these regions, from the shade of a tree to the movement of a worker. His work from this period reflects a steady interest in the textures and figures of the places he visited.

      • Constantinople

      Key Works and Subjects

His brush often turned toward the people and places encountered during his travels. In 1900, he produced Portrait of an Orientalist Beauty, an oil on canvas. His interest in the Middle East and North Africa is visible in works like Under the Lemon Tree, Cairo and North African water carrier. He also captured the atmosphere of Constantinople on a large canvas, signing it with his full name.

Beyond these travels, he returned to more local and personal subjects. He produced a watercolour sketch titled Marple and a landscape study known as Marple Locks. His religious interests are reflected in The Passing of Christ. Later in his life, he painted Dr F.J. Kitt of Stockport, which he signed and dated 1940.

      Later Years and Death

The later years of Frederick Davenport Bates were spent in the quietude of Davenport, where he resided at 9 Mile End Lane. This area, which would later be known as Grantham Gate, provided a settled backdrop to a life once defined by the movement of travel. He remained the youngest of a large family, the final child born to Peter and Mary Bates. His sisters—Annie, Mary, Emily, and Elizabeth—remained part of the family structure that had shaped his early years in Manchester and Stockport.

His presence in the local landscape was marked by a steady commitment to his craft, even as the decades passed. The name he carried, having added Davenport to his birth name, became a permanent fixture of his identity. He died in 1930, leaving behind a body of work that captured the light and people of the places he had seen. His life ended as it had been lived, rooted in the specificities of the English landscape and the distant, sun-drenched corners of the world he once explored.
