The Life and Art of Friedrich König

Friedrich König was an Austrian painter, illustrator, and designer born in Vienna. His formal artistic education began at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, followed by studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he studied under Christian Griepenkerl, August Eisenmenger, and Carl von Blaas. He furthered his training at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and traveled through Italy, Germany, Spain, and France. Upon returning to Vienna, he worked as an illustrator, contributing to The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Picture.

A significant figure in the Art Nouveau movement, König was involved with the Hagen society and became a member of the Vienna Secession. He served on the group's working committee and held the position of vice-president in 1902. His work was frequently featured in the Secession's official magazine, Ver Sacrum, for which he provided illustrations and served as editor. He also taught wood engraving at the Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen between 1902 and 1916.

      Artistic Style and Notable Works

König’s artistic output was diverse, encompassing graphic design, embossing, and oil painting. His paintings were characterized by a tendency towards Romanticism, often described as beautifully ornamented and softly atmospheric, particularly in his landscapes and large-scale figurative images. In contrast, his woodcuts possessed a starker style, sometimes incorporating elements of Japonism. His skill extended to various mediums, including copper plate and mortar sculpture.

Some of his documented works include:

      • Der stille Teich (The still pond) – an oil on canvas.
      • Untitled (seated nude) – a woodcut on paper.
      • Untitled (flying woman) – a woodcut on paper.
