The Artistic Evolution of Gerwald Rockenschaub
Born in Linz, Austria, Gerwald Rockenschaub is a multifaceted artist whose practice spans painting, installation art, and music. His early career was defined by his studies in history, psychology, and philosophy in Vienna, followed by training at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. During the 1980s, his work emerged within the Neo-Geo painting movement, characterized by an abstract approach to form. By 1987, Rockenschaub moved away from painting, finding the medium no longer contemporary, and transitioned toward installation and sculpture.
His later installations often engage with the architecture of exhibition spaces, such as the White Cube, sometimes incorporating visitors as part of the aesthetic experience. Utilizing industrial materials like PVC, his works are frequently produced based on computer designs. This connection to digital aesthetics was notably demonstrated in his work for the facade of the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin, which featured a pixelated cloud design.
