      Na prvi pogled

      The Munich Years

Born in Veitshöchheim, Germany, in 1853, Hermann Ziebland entered a world shaped by the precision of his lineage. The son of an inspector and engineer, he was the great-nephew of the architect Georg Friedrich Ziebland. His early education took him through Latin school and grammar school before he turned toward the formal study of art. Between 1870 and 1874, he attended the School of Applied Arts, eventually finding his way to the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich. It was here that his technical foundation was solidified under the guidance of several notable instructors.

His training was rigorous and focused. He studied under:

These years in Munich defined his trajectory as a painter of both portraiture and genre scenes. His development was not confined to the classroom; he sought the light and perspective of Italy through study trips, a common necessity for the serious painter of his era. His presence in the art circles of Dresden and Munich allowed his work to reach the public eye, and his imagery even found its way into the pages of Universum. Illustrierte Zeitschrift für die deutsche Familie.

      A Life in Paint

Ziebland’s output was characterized by a commitment to the human figure and the quiet narratives of daily life. As a genre painter, he captured moments of social interaction, while his portraiture sought to fix the character of his subjects upon the canvas. One notable example of his skill is his 1878 work, Portrait of Heinrich Ritter von Reichardt. His ability to translate the likeness of his contemporaries ensured his place within the professional landscape of 19th-century German art.

The demands of his profession were matched by the passing of time. He passed away in Munich in 1896 at the age of 43, following a long illness. He left behind a legacy of instruction, having mentored students such as Rudolf Wimmer. He is buried at the Alter Südlicher Friedhof in Munich, a final resting place that marks the end of a life dedicated to the observation of the world around him.
