Born in London, Ontario, as John Richard Chambers, the artist was known professionally as Jack Chambers after 1970. His artistic journey began with studies at Sir Adam Beck Collegiate Institute under Selwyn Dewdney, followed by time at H.B. Beal Secondary School and the University of Western Ontario. Between 1953 and 1961, he spent eight years studying and working in Europe, where he met Pablo Picasso. His early painting style was influenced by Surrealism, particularly during his time in Spain, but his approach evolved significantly over time.
Chambers developed a unique theory he called Perceptual Realism, a concept he detailed in an essay in the late 1960s. This style sought to show the essence of matter through light and material, functioning as a faculty of inner vision. His technique shifted from surrealist-influenced works to a more photo-realist-influenced style. In the mid-1960s, he experimented with silver paintings using aluminum pigment and began incorporating a sense of temporal movement into his compositions, where forms appeared fragmented, as if put together like an experience in particles.
Beyond the canvas, Chambers was a filmmaker who completed six films between 1964 and 1970. His filmography includes:
His films often served as montages examining the contrast between nature and society, utilizing both black and white and colour. In 1968, he founded the Canadian Artists' Representation (CARFAC) following a dispute with the National Gallery of Canada regarding reproduction rights and fees. His work is held in several notable collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and Museum London.
