The Life and Artistic Evolution of Jean Degottex
Jean Degottex was a French abstract painter born in Sathonay-Camp. After moving to Paris at age fifteen, he eventually devoted himself entirely to painting. His early works, created while serving in the military in Tunisia and Algeria from 1939 to 1941, were figurative paintings influenced by Fauvism. By 1948, his art transitioned into abstraction, closely related to lyrical abstraction. In 1951, he was awarded the Prix Kandinsky, and by 1954, his style moved toward gestural abstraction, emphasizing speed of execution and freedom.
Degottex's work was notably influenced by East Asian calligraphy and Zen Philosophy. He explored various techniques throughout his career, including:
- The use of Chinese ink wash in the Médias series.
- Tearing paper to reveal texture in the seriés d’ARR.
- An imprint technique involving folding paper surfaces, used in the Lignes-Report and Plis-Report series.
Exhibitions and Recognition
Throughout his career, Degottex participated in numerous exhibitions across France and internationally. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Galerie de Beaune, Galerie Kléber, and the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He also exhibited at the Abbaye de Sénanque in Gordes. His paintings have been included in significant group exhibitions such as Documenta II in Germany and the Venice Biennale in Italy.
