      Early Life and Artistic Training

Jean Zippel began his life in Berlin in 1789. His early years were shaped by the disciplined atmosphere of the Royal Prussian Academy of Arts. It was here that he first learned to handle the tools of a painter, focusing his attention on the technical demands of history and portraiture. He spent much of his formative time under the guidance of Johann Gottlieb Puhlmann, a teacher who helped him navigate the formal requirements of the academy. This period of study provided the foundation for a career spent capturing the likenesses of individuals and the weight of historical moments.

Beyond the instruction of Puhlmann, Zippel sought further refinement through the work of other masters. He studied under Franz Hillner, adding another layer to his technical understanding. These years in Berlin were not merely about learning to see, but about learning how to translate the physical world onto a flat surface with precision. His training was thorough, moving from the basic principles of form to the more complex requirements of historical composition. This rigorous preparation in his home city set the stage for his eventual move toward the French art scene.

      Artistic Activity in Paris

In 1811, the move to Paris marked a shift in his daily life. He enrolled as a student at the École des Beaux-Arts that same year. By 1812, his training moved into the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros. He remained a resident of the city for decades, staying in Paris from 1811 until at least 1841.

His hands were often busy with the study of others. He spent time exhibiting copies of works by Rubens and Titian. This habit of looking closely at the old masters continued late into his career. Around 1841, his presence was noted through his copying activity in the Louvre.

      Key Works and Collections

His brush captured specific moments of political movement and presence. One notable oil on canvas, titled The Passage of the Allied Sovereigns on the Boulevard Saint-Denis, April 10, 1814, dates to about 1815. This work, known as Passage des Souverains alliés sur le Boulevard de Saint-Denis en 1814, is held in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. The painting records a precise historical intersection on a Parisian street.

Other works focus on the figures of the era. He painted Friedrich Wilhelm III. and Tsar Alexander I before Paris. This oil on canvas was last seen in the Berlin Stadtschloss in 1915. These subjects reflect the historical interests that guided his hand during his years in France.
