Born Minnie Clyde Dixon on a cotton plantation in Belcher, Louisiana, the woman who would become known to the art world as Clyde Connell carried the essence of the American South within her very being. Her early life, shaped by the landscapes of northwestern Louisiana near Shreveport, provided a profound wellspring of inspiration that would later permeate her creative output. Though she began her journey in a period marked by the complexities and hardships of the Jim Crow South, her artistic evolution would eventually transcend regional boundaries to find resonance in the global language of abstraction.

After marrying Thomas Dixon Connell Jr in 1922, she continued to inhabit the landscapes that defined her. It was during her travels to New York City, while representing Louisiana in the Presbyterian Women's leadership, that she encountered the transformative power of Abstract Expressionism.
