A Life Between Brussels and Amsterdam

Louis Jacques Goudman entered the world in Brussels on 29 August 1880. His early years led him toward a formal education in the arts, studying at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid and later at the Amsterdamer Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. This training provided the foundation for a career that would span several decades of European history.

For a time, Goudman lived and worked in Zaandam, staying there until 1911. Eventually, he moved to Amsterdam, where he remained until his death on 26 September 1939. His presence in the Dutch art scene was marked by his membership in the prestigious Arti et Amicitiae society.

The Quiet Focus of the Brush

Goudman’s work was centered on the observation of life through portraits and still lifes. He possessed a steady hand for capturing the likeness of individuals, such as his 1930 oil painting of the performer Bart Kreeft. His ability to render human presence is also seen in his depictions of figures like Isidore Snapper.

His studio practice involved a careful study of form and light. Some of his subjects included:

      • Self-portraits that captured his own likeness
      • Nude studies, such as seated and standing female figures
      • Portraits of notable figures like Gerrit Warnderink Vinke

      A Legacy in Paint

As a teacher, Goudman passed his technical knowledge to the next generation of artists. He instructed several individuals, including Maria Helena Disselhoff, Jan Everts, Lisbeth Messer-Heybroek, and Alida Henriëtte Runeman. Through these students, his approach to the canvas continued to influence others.

His career began around 1895 and continued through the end of his life in 1939. While he lived through a period of immense change in Europe, his dedication to the traditional subjects of portraiture and still life remained a constant part of his professional identity.
