The Life and Vision of Mary Tillman Smith

Born in Brookhaven, United States, Mary Tillman Smith was a self-taught painter, folk artist, and etcher who lived and worked in Mississippi for most of her life. The daughter of sharecroppers and the third of thirteen children, she was identified as deaf at an early age. Despite the isolation of her childhood and having completed only a fifth-grade education, she found an outlet in drawing. After a marriage to Gus Williams and a subsequent marriage to John Smith, she moved to Hazlehurst, Mississippi, to live independently. For many years, she worked as a gardener and performed domestic work until her retirement in the 1970s. Following a stroke in 1985 that impaired her speech and writing, her ability to produce work slowed, and she eventually stopped painting in 1991. She died in 1995.

      Artistic Style and Expression

Smith’s work is characterized by bold, colorful, and expressive paintings, often created on readily available materials such as plywood, corrugated tin, or wood. Using house paint, she developed a highly stylized imagery that frequently featured figures with upraised arms, an image associated with spiritual enlightenment or ecstasy. Her compositions often utilized strong colors, animating dots and dashes, and sometimes incorporated cryptic, abstracted text that created a personal painting vocabulary. While her earlier works often utilized only one or two colors, her later compositions evolved into geometric arrangements with complex juxtapositions of positive and negative space. Her art was deeply personal, often consisting of portraits of family, friends, and neighbors, and she transformed her home and garden into an immersive outdoor environment of her work.
