Filip Aleksije de Lašlo, rođen kao Fülöp Laub 30. aprila 1869. godine u Budimpešti, u Mađarskoj, izdigao se iz skromnih početaka da postane slavni portretista evropskih plemića i kraljevskih porodica. Njegovi roditelji, Adolf i Johana Laub, bili su krojač i krojačica jevrejskog porekla. Svoje prve umetničke korake napravio je kroz zanat fotografa, dok je istovremeno pohađao umetničke studije. Uspešno se upisao na Nacionalnu akademiju umetnosti u Budimpešti, gde je crtao pod mentorstvom majstora kao što su Bertalan Székely i Károly Lotz. Nakon pariskog uspeha, de Lašlo se 1903. godine preselio u Beč, a potom se 1907. skrasio u Londonu, gde je proveo ostatak života. Postao je izuzetno tražen portretista među evropskom elitom, a njegovi klijenti uključivali su monarhe, plemiće, industrijere, naučnike i istaknute ličnosti iz različitih sfera.
Godine 1900, de Lašlo se oženio Lusi Madlen Ginis, članicom istaknutog bankarskog roda. Njihov brak donio je šest dece i sedamnaest unučadi. Iako je ranije pokazivao interesovanje za katoličanstvo, nakon venčanja prešao je u anglikansku crkvu. Uprkos britanskom državljanstvu i stabilnom životu u Engleskoj, tokom Prvog svetskog rata (1917–19rt18) suočio se sa interniranjem zbog sumnji u vezi sa njegovim austrijskim vezama, što je bilo period velikih životnih nedaća.
De Lašlov stil prepoznatljiv je po realizmu, pedantnom detalju i živopisnoj paleti boja. Bio je majstor u dočaravanju tekstura tkanina, nakita i nijansi kože. Njegovi portreti često prožimaju osećaj elegancije, sofisticiranosti i društvene prestiža. Iako je prvenstveno poznat po portretima, stvarao je i pejzaže i žanrovske scene.
Rad Filipa de Lašla pruža dragocen uvid u živote i izgled evropskog visokog društva krajem 19. i početkom 20. veka.
