      Na prvi pogled

      The Painter of Rigoli

Born in the small village of Rigoli near Pisa, Turino Vanni lived through a period of shifting styles in late 14th-century Italy. His life was rooted in the landscape of San Giuliano Terme, where he began his work. He did not seek to reinvent the language of his predecessors but rather to follow the path set by Taddeo Bartoli. His brushwork reflected the habits of an imitator, finding a steady rhythm in the established forms of his time.

His hands were busy with the demands of local devotion. Between 1390 and 1395, the records show him working within the Duomo of Pisa. This was a period of steady labor, where his presence was felt in the sacred spaces of the city. He was part of a lineage of painters, identified as the uncle of Nero and Bernado di Nello, who would go on to carry the traditions of the era forward.

      Works and Signatures

The traces of his hand remain in several specific locations, often marked by his own hand. He left behind pieces that speak to the quiet devotion of the era, such as those found in the church of San Paolo Ripo d'Arno in Pisa. His work there shows a specific arrangement of figures, a scene of the Virgin and Child with saints, surrounded by four kneeling figures. He signed this work in 1397, leaving his name and his origin in the paint: TORINUS VANNIS DE REGULI DEPINXIT A.D. MCCCXCVII.

His reach extended beyond the local churches of Pisa. His output included:

      • A Madonna with angels, held in a convent in Palermo.
      • A signed Madonna, currently held in the Louvre.

      A Legacy in Paint

Turino Vanni died in Pisa in 1438, leaving behind a body of work that remains tied to the specific religious needs of his community. He was a man of his time, working within the constraints and comforts of the late Trecento. His significance lies in his connection to the artistic families of the region and his role in the visual life of the Duomo of Pisa. He remained a painter of the local landscape, focused on the figures and the saints that defined the spiritual world of his neighbors.
