**Rani život i obrazovanje**
Lee Ungno, poznat i kao Yi Eungro, bio je francuski slikar i grafičar korejskog porekla, rođen u Seulu, Južna Koreja, 1904. godine. Njegovo ranije doba obeležilo je kratko školovanje u školi Hongseong Botong Hakyo (홍성보통학교, 홍城초등학교, 洪城普通學校), nakon čega se od 1920. godine potpuno posvetio proučavanju slikarstva pod mentorstvom Yeomjae Song Tae-hoe.**Umetnička karijera u Koreji i Japanu**
Umetnička put Lee Ungnoa počeo je ozbiljno kada se 1922. godine preselio u Seul, postajući šegrt slavnog kaligrafa, slikara i fotografa Haeganga Kim Gyu-jina. Prvenstveno je učio slikanje "četiri gospodara" u prepoznatljivom „Haegang stilu“. Posebno je značajno njegovo inko slikarstvo bambusa, mukjuk (묵죽, 墨竹, bambus u tušu), koje je osvojilo nagradu na 3. godišnjoj korejskoj izložbi umetnosti. Nakon temeljnog školovanja u tradicionalnom slikarstvu tušem u Koreji od 1920-ih do 1930-ih, Lee je postepeno počeo eksperimentisati sa tehnikama zapadnjačkog slikarstva u Japanu. Njegova dela iz 1950-ih predstavljaju kreativne pokušaje spajanja istočnjačkih medija i poteza četkicom sa zapadnom perspektivom i formama. Godine 1958.
