      Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Origins and History of the Gallery

The Dunedin Public Art Gallery holds the main public art collection of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. Established in 1884, it holds the distinction of being the first public art gallery in New Zealand. This foundation was laid by W. M. Hodgkins, marking a significant moment in the country's cultural development. The institution has maintained its presence in the city for over a century, growing alongside the community it serves.

The origins of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery are rooted in the mid-nineteenth century. Since its founding in 1884, the gallery has functioned as a central repository for art within the region. It began its life as a dedicated space for public viewing, a purpose it continues to fulfill today. The early establishment of such a space in Dunedin provided a foundation for the collection of both local and international works that reside within its walls.

The Evolution of the Gallery Buildings

The physical presence of the gallery has shifted through several distinct spaces since its inception. Its earliest location was within the structure that now serves as the maritime gallery in the Otago Museum. Between 1888 and 1890, the collection moved to the Municipal Chambers in the Octagon. This period of transition preceded a move to a purpose-designed building situated in Queen's Gardens in 1907. Following this, the collection was housed in an annex to the Otago Museum before finding a new home in a building designed by Edmund Anscombe. This structure, located in Logan Park, Dunedin North, was originally constructed for the 1925–26 New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition and was moved to its current site in 1927.

The gallery eventually found its way to its present location in 1996. This site is the refitted D.I.C. building, a space that provides a permanent setting for the works held within the collection. The movement between these various architectural settings reflects the changing needs of the institution as it settled into its current role in the city.

      A Diverse and Extensive Collection

The collection encompasses a wide range of historic and contemporary works, bringing together the voices of New Zealand and overseas artists. It holds one of the most numerous collections of works by Frances Hodgkins. This breadth extends into the realm of European history, as the gallery maintains the most extensive collection of Old Master paintings in New Zealand. These works are accompanied by significant holdings of overseas Old Master and modern prints and drawings.

Beyond painting, the holdings include a notable collection of Japanese woodblock prints and various historical European art. The decorative arts are represented through extensive holdings of ceramics, glassware, metalwork, furniture, and textiles. Each object exists as a physical presence, from the delicate lines of a print to the weight of functional metalwork.

      Masterpieces of the Art Collection

The presence of significant holdings of paintings by post-1800 overseas artists allows for a quiet contemplation of shifting European perspectives. Within these walls, the works of Turner, Gainsborough, Claude, and Machiavelli exist as physical anchors of art history. These pieces are held alongside a notable collection of Japanese woodblock prints and a substantial assembly of over 1300 British watercolours. The weight of these historical works provides a steady backdrop to the gallery's more contemporary acquisitions.

There is a particular gravity in encountering the only Monet in a New Zealand collection. This work sits in conversation with the master works of Derain, Tissot, and Burne-Jones. The collection also honors the legacy of the Dunedin-born painter Frances Hodgkins, whose presence is felt throughout the holdings. Local identity and international movements meet in the quiet space between a portrait like C.F. Goldie's All 'e same t'e Pakeha and the broader, more expansive reach of the overseas masters.

      Exhibitions and Public Programmes

The gallery maintains a presence in the international art dialogue through its history of hosting numerous overseas exhibitions. In the 1990s, the space held the Masterpieces of the Guggenheim modern art show. It also hosted the Tate Gallery exhibition, The Pre-Raphaelite Dream. These significant events bring a global perspective to the local setting, allowing for a direct encounter with significant international movements.

An innovative programme of events ensures the gallery remains a place of active engagement. The schedule includes a wide range of activities such as lectures, floor talks, film and video screenings, performances, and workshops. These offerings provide opportunities to observe art through different lenses, moving beyond the silent observation of the permanent collection. For those seeking a more structured experience, regular guided tours are available for key exhibitions or by arrangement.
