The Life and Artistic Journey of Franz Wiegele

Born in Nötsch im Gailtal, Austria, Franz Wiegele was a painter and artist who emerged as a significant figure in Austrian modern art. His formal training began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied from 1907 to 1911. During this formative period, he exhibited alongside artists such as Egon Schiele, Anton Faistauer, and Albert Paris Gütersloh as part of the Neukunstgruppe. Wiegele was also a prominent member of the Nötscher Kreis, a group of four painters that included Sebastian Isepp, Anton Kolig, and Anton Mahringer.

His career was marked by both international travel and significant personal hardship. After receiving a scholarship for studies in Paris in 1912, he experienced the turbulence of the First World War, which included a journey through the Sahara and subsequent captivity in France. Following his release to Switzerland in 1916, he worked in Zurich until 1925, during which time he produced his major work, Die Grüne. Upon returning to Nötsch, he expanded his practice to include sculpture, specifically creating portrait busts.

      Artistic Legacy and Final Years

Wiegele’s body of work is noted for its focus on portraits and female nudes, establishing him as a pioneer of modern painting in Austria. His exhibitions reached beyond his homeland, appearing in locations such as:

His connection to his roots was evident in his use of the Slovenian language and in works like Gailtalerinnen, which depicts two young women in traditional Gailtal costume. His life came to an end in 1944 when he died in his Nötsch studio during a bombing raid, an event that resulted in the destruction of many of his works. In recognition of his contributions, a street in Vienna-Liesing was named after him, and a museum was established in his childhood home in 1998.
