**tidigt liv och utbildning**
lee ungno, även känd som yi eungro, var en koreansk-född fransk målare och grafikern född i seoul, sydkorea 1904. Hans tidiga liv präglades av en kort vistelse vid hongseong botong hakyo (홍성보통학교, 홍城초등학교, 洪城普通學校), varpå han ägnade sig åt att studera måleri under yeomjae song tae-hoe från 1920.**konstnärlig karriär i korea och japan**
lee ungnos konstnärliga bana tog fart på allvar när han flyttade till seoul 1922, där han blev lärling hos den berömda kalligrafen, målaren och fotografen haegang kim gyu-jin. Han lärde sig främst att måla de fyra gentlemännen i den så kallade "haegang-stilen". Särskilt anmärkningsvärt var hans tuschmålning av bambu, mukjuk (묵죽, 墨竹, tuschbambu), som vann ett pris vid den tredje årliga joseon konstutställningen. Lee ungno vann konsekvent priser i joseon konstutställningen under hela kolonialperioden. Han var dock övertygad om att de östliga tuschmålarna borde modernisera sin stil.
