      A Life of Flemish Letters

Felix Timmermans was a prolific author from Flanders, born in the Belgian city of Lier. As the thirteenth of fourteen children, he grew up in a large family and remained in Lier until his death at age 60. An autodidact by nature, he expressed his creativity through a wide variety of literary forms, including plays, historical novels, religious works, and poems. He was a highly accomplished writer, having been nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times.

His literary output was vast and diverse. He is perhaps best known for his 1916 book Pallieter. Throughout his career, he also utilized the pen-name Polleke van Mher. His bibliography includes works such as Schemeringen van de dood, De ivoren fluit, and Schoon Lier. In addition to his prose and poetry, he was a painter and drawer.

      Literary and Artistic Legacy

Timmermans's body of work spans many decades, touching upon themes ranging from religious narratives to fables. His collections often grouped various stories and poems together, such as in Vertelsels or Brevarium. His writing explored various subjects, including the lives of saints and reflections on Flemish life. Some of his notable works include Het kindeke Jezus in Vlaanderen and De harp van Sint-Franciscus.

Beyond his books, his life was marked by significant cultural engagement. During the early years of the Second World War, he served as an editor of the Flemish nationalist Volk and attended meetings of the Europäische Schriftsteller-Vereinigung. In 1942, he was awarded the Rembrandt prize by the University of Hamburg.
