The Life and Artistic Journey of Fritz Winkler

Born in Dresden, Germany, Fritz Winkler was the son of a lithographer. His formal artistic training began at the Dresden School of Applied Arts from 1909 to 1912, followed by studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Emanuel Hegenbarth. His education was interrupted by service as a soldier during the First World War, where he sustained a severe wound that resulted in the loss of his left eye. Following the war, he continued his studies as a master student under Hegenbarth until 1921.

Winkler’s professional career included significant work as a freelance illustrator for the Volkszeitung für Plauen und das Vogtland. He was also a regular contributor to the Büchergilde Gutenberg and its monthly magazine. His artistic output was deeply impacted by the historical events of the mid-20th century; during the National Socialist era, many of his works were confiscated as part of the "Degenerate Art" campaign, and much of his previous body of work was lost during the air raids on Dresden in 1945. In his later years, he produced over three hundred paintings and five thousand watercolors, which he bequeathed to the State Art Collections in Dresden.

      Artistic Focus and Style

As a member of the second generation of Expressionists, Winkler’s work was characterized by a focus on landscapes, the working person, and animals. His depictions of the animal world were a recurring theme in his oeuvre. In his landscape compositions, the naturalistic and topographical elements often took a backseat to a more painterly, dynamic, and expressive approach to his subjects. His artistic philosophy emphasized that true art is found in honesty and truth, stating that "the truth is the beauty of art."
