A Life of Pigment and Grit

Born in Nybro, Sweden, on October 28th, 1900, Henry Holmstrom moved through the landscapes of the American Midwest with a quiet, steady hand. His early years were shaped by a family that emigrated from Sweden shortly after his birth, leaving him in the care of his grandmother until he reached fifteen. Life was not easy during his formative years in Chicago and Minnesota. To support himself while studying at the Minnesota School of Art between 1924 and 1927, he worked as a janitor and lived on little more than oatmeal. He did not rely on store-bought supplies; instead, he spent his time grinding his own pigments, a slow and physical process that connected him directly to the raw materials of his craft.

His training was grounded in the local traditions of Minnesota painters like Cameron Booth and Anthony Angarola. Later, he sought further instruction at the Art Institute of Chicago. By the 1930s, he had settled into a studio on Franklin Avenue in Minneapolis, sharing the space with brothers Elof and Peter Wedin. This period was marked by a shared existence among Swedish-American painters, a group that included Dewey Albinson and B.J.O. Nordfeldt, where they often painted together during the lean years of the Depression.

The Work of the Land and the Wall

Holmstrom’s output was varied, ranging from intimate landscapes to large-scale public works. In 1927, his painting Peasant Dance earned him second prize at the Thirteenth Annual Exhibition of Minneapolis and St. Paul Artists at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. His early exhibitions were local and modest, including a one-man show of landscapes held at Mabel Ulrich's Bookstore in 1928. He also found ways to contribute to the civic fabric through the Federal Art Project of the Works Project Administration (WPA).

His hand left marks on public buildings across Minnesota:

Beyond these large commissions, he was active in the local art community, directing the Municipal Sketch Club under the Minneapolis Park Board and participating in the Brush and Pen Art Colony. His work was not confined to the studio; it was part of the movement of people and labor in the region.

      Later Years and Legacy

The 1940s brought a change in pace. During the early years of the decade, Holmstrom moved to San Francisco, where he worked within the ship industry. This period of manual labor preceded his return to Minneapolis in 1944. He continued to paint, teach, and exhibit throughout the remainder of his life, maintaining a presence in the Twin Cities art scene.

Before his death in June 1981, the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis hosted an exhibition that brought together forty-six of his paintings, spanning the years from 1929 through 1978. His physical traces remain in several permanent collections, including:

      • The Minneapolis Institute of Arts
      • The Minnesota Historical Society
      • The American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis
      • The Corcoran Gallery of Art
