The Life and Versatility of Michal Dubay

Michal Dubay was a Slovak painter, educator, and publicist who played a significant role in the cultural life of eastern Slovakia. Born in Hačava, Slovakia, he was the eldest of seven children in a family whose father, Dezider Dubay, worked in Pittsburgh, USA, to support them. After completing his studies in Mukachevo, Dubay pursued higher education in Prague, where he studied history, geography, and librarianship at Charles University. Throughout his academic years and his professional life, he remained deeply dedicated to painting.

Beyond his canvas, Dubay was a multifaceted figure involved in various cultural and educational institutions. He was a co-founder of several organizations, including the Pedagogical Faculty in Prešov and the State Scientific Library in Košice. His contributions extended to the development of the Ukrainian National Theatre in Prešov, where he also served as a scenographer. His diverse career included roles as a teacher, editor, and a member of the Prešov local national committee.

      Artistic Evolution and Technique

The artistic output of Michal Dubay, sometimes exhibited under the name Mil Day, is characterized by three distinct stylistic periods. His early work from 1925 to 1940 exhibited cubist tendencies, including portraits and religious subjects. This was followed by a period of critical realism between 1940 and 1960, which focused on the landscapes of eastern Slovakia, such as Šariš and the High Tatras. His later period, spanning from 1960 to 1980, moved toward an idealizing style featuring dreamlike landscapes with undulating meadows and hills.

Dubay’s technical approach was marked by a profound fascination with light, specifically the way sunlight casts varying intensities of rays. His body of work includes:

In his final years, his work displayed surrealist elements, often utilizing experimental techniques such as the layered application of colors and substrates.
