      1794 - 1878

      A Life Shaped by Change

Pietro Ayres lived through an era of profound political shifts in Italy. Born on November 9, 1794, his early years were marked by the turbulence of the Napoleonic era. In 1812, as a young man, he left to join the Napoleonic armies during their difficult campaign into Russia. This period of conflict preceded a long period of personal transition. Following the restoration of the House of Savoy, Ayres sought refuge in Rome, where he lived in exile for fourteen years.

After his time in Rome, his path led him through Savigliano and eventually to Turin. These movements across the Piedmont region helped shape the perspective of a man who would become deeply connected to the local nobility and the changing social fabric of his home. He settled in Turin, the city where he would ultimately spend his final days.

      The Portraitist of the Court

Ayres found his true calling in the quiet intimacy of portraiture. His reputation grew significantly in 1830 after he completed a portrait of Count Galeani Napione. This specific work brought him an appointment as a court portraitist, a position that allowed him to document the faces of the era's most influential figures. He became a painter of the royal family and various members of the Piedmontese aristocracy.

His brush captured many notable individuals, including:

      • Marchese Filippo Asinari
      • Giuseppe Barbaroux
      • Filippo Morozzo
      • Count Bogino
      • Marchese d'Ormea

Beyond the faces of the elite, Ayres contributed to the religious and civic life of the region. He painted altarpieces for churches in Turin, Savigliano, Racconigi, and Alessandria. His work also extended to larger architectural decorations, such as the ceiling, medallions, and curtain of the Teatro Sociale. He even applied his eye for detail to historical documentation, creating an album titled Armeria antica e Moderna di S. M Carlo Alberto, which recorded the costumes and arms of the Royal army of Charles Albert.

      A Final Chapter in Turin

The work of Pietro Ayres remains a record of a specific time and place in Piedmontese history. From his religious altarpieces to his detailed studies of military regalia, he documented the people and the customs of his era. He passed away in Turin on June 11, 1878, leaving behind a body of work that captures the likenesses of the nineteenth-century Italian court.
