      1889 - 1943

      Artistic Training and Education

The artistic formation of Voldemar Kangro-Pool began in the studio of Kristjan Raud, where he spent the years between 1907 and 1909. This early period provided the foundational discipline necessary for his subsequent movements across Europe. His development was not confined to a single tradition, as he sought out diverse perspectives during his formative years.

Seeking broader horizons, he moved to Munich to study at Anton Azhbe’s art school. This period of instruction was followed by a significant chapter in Paris, where he attended the «Ecoles des Beaux Arts» from 1910 to 1913. These years in France and Germany allowed him to refine his technical approach before returning to his roots. By 1919, he had joined the Pallas Art School, where he remained until 1921.

      Notable Artworks and Techniques

The artist’s technical range allowed for a varied exploration of media, moving between the soft textures of pastel and the precision of printmaking. In 1915, he produced Mehe portree, a work executed in pastel on cardboard. This period of his development also saw the use of oil on canvas, notably in the 1918 depiction of Mart Saar. His ability to manipulate different surfaces is further evidenced by his 1919 work Ecstasy, which was rendered on Indian ink paper.

His later years involved a shift toward more graphic, structured forms. Between 1922 and 1924, he produced High Skies, a woodcut that demonstrates a departure from his earlier, more fluid applications of color. This period of experimentation suggests a disciplined approach to the limitations of the woodblock. Even his portraiture reflected a specific focus on the subject, such as the 1918 portrait of Friedebert Tuglas, which remains a significant part of his visual record.

      Exhibitions and Collections

The preservation of Kangro-Pool’s visual output is distributed across several significant Estonian institutions. The Estonian Theatre and Music Museum's painting collection maintains a presence of his work, including the 1918 portrait of Mart Saar and the piece titled in the country. These holdings reflect a specific era of Estonian artistic development, placing his contributions within the broader context of the nation's cultural history.

His presence in the public eye has been marked by focused thematic displays. The work Ecstasy was featured in the 2017 Kumu exhibition Children of the Flowers of Evil. Estonian Decadent Art. This exhibition placed his ink on paper alongside other works of the period, highlighting his connection to the aesthetic sensibilities of that time.

Beyond these museum holdings, the Under and Tuglas Literature Centre's art collection contains works by the artist. These pieces exist alongside a diverse array of items within the center's holdings, ensuring his graphic and painted contributions remain accessible to those studying the intersection of Estonian literature and visual art.
