    关于此艺术品

    Lonely Seagull — Lu Weihua

This piece of embroidery was done by the artist when she was 85 years old based on the painting of Li Shan (1686-1762 AD), one of the well-known painters dubbed as the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou”. Inspired by the lines “knowing nowhere to go, (I’m) just like a lonely seagull in the world” in the poem “Feelings at Night During Travel” by the heavyweight ancient Chinese poet Du Fu (712-770 AD), the painter depicted a lonely seagull with a curled neck and a drooping head, shivering while standing among several withering reeds, a scene full of bleakness and loneliness that touches the viewers’ heart right away at the first sight. With bold experiment in terms of artistic expression and combination of various painting techniques, the painter made full use of both elegant and rigid brushwork, coming up with a piece of real treasure. While transferring the atmosphere of the painting with her unique embroidery techniques, the artisan endowed this piece with something new based on her recreation, expressing her value of calm and composure during adverse moments of life. By use of a series of embroidery techniques including thickening stitches (shi zhen, 施针), long and short stitches (tao zhen, 套针), seeding stitches (dian zhen, 点针), full-and-broken-line stitches (xushi zhen, 虚实针) and masterful coloring, the artisan successfully created a rare piece with vivid depiction of the seagull and plants, illustrating a soothing zen-like scene.Award:Gold Award at the “Hundred Flower Cup-Tian Gong Yi Yuan” Chinese Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Exposition of the International Exposition of Arts and Crafts, namely, the 9th Chinese Arts and Crafts Masterpiece Exhibition in 2008

Lu Weihua: Bridging Tradition and Innovation in Botanical Painting

Lu Weihua’s artistic journey began amidst the rich cultural heritage of Yangzhou, China—a city renowned for its centuries-old tradition of embroidery and celebrated as “every female of Yangzhou is good at embroidering.” Born into a family steeped in scholarly pursuits and artistic craftsmanship, Lu Shuxian, his mother, instilled in him an early appreciation for both calligraphy and the meticulous art of botanical painting, mirroring the stylistic influences of prominent painters like “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou.” This formative experience would profoundly shape his subsequent creative endeavors.

Early Life & Artistic Foundations: Lu Shuxian’s dedication to artistic excellence extended beyond her own practice; she nurtured her daughter’s passion for art from a young age, fostering an understanding of traditional Chinese painting techniques and aesthetics.

The Influence of Yangzhou Embroidery: The legacy of Yangzhou embroidery—characterized by its delicate silk threads, precise stitches, and evocative depictions of landscapes—served as a cornerstone in Lu Shuxian's artistic vision. This influence is palpable in her meticulous attention to detail and her ability to convey emotion through subtle brushstrokes.

A Daughter’s Artistic Pursuit: Lu Junjian, Lu Shuxian’s daughter, continued the family tradition of artistic exploration, honing her skills in various embroidery genres while absorbing the wisdom imparted by her mother.

The Emergence of Freehand Ink Painting Embroidery Lu Weihua's artistic breakthrough arrived with a revolutionary approach—the fusion of traditional ink painting and embroidery techniques. Inspired by his mother’s pioneering spirit, Lu Weihua embarked on a path that defied convention, blending the expressive power of calligraphy with the precision of needlework. This innovative method distinguishes him from many contemporary artists and underscores his commitment to preserving cultural heritage while embracing artistic experimentation.

Conceptual Innovation: Recognizing the limitations of conventional art forms, Lu Weihua sought to transcend boundaries by merging two distinct disciplines—a bold step that reflects a deep understanding of artistic history and symbolism.

Technique & Material Exploration: He meticulously studied the intricacies of silk splitting—a technique perfected over centuries—and skillfully applied it to create embroidery pieces that capture the essence of ink paintings, resulting in breathtaking visual narratives.

Notable Achievements & Recognition Lu Weihua’s artistic accomplishments have garnered international acclaim and cemented his position as a leading figure in contemporary botanical painting. His dedication to preserving Yangzhou embroidery traditions has been honored with numerous accolades, including titles such as “Advanced Artist,” “One of the First ‘Chinese Embroidery Masters,’” and “Representative Inheritor of Provincial-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage Item.”

Lotus Mountain Success: Lu Weihua’s collaborative project with Bergen Water Gardens—featuring his newly bred lotus hybrids—demonstrates his commitment to horticultural innovation and underscores the enduring beauty of Yangzhou's natural landscape.

International Recognition: His lotus cultivars have achieved success in prestigious competitions like the “Second National New Varieties of Water Lilies Competition” and the “37th National Lotus Exhibition,” showcasing his talent as a botanist and artist alike.

Legacy & Continuing Artistic Exploration Lu Weihua’s artistic legacy extends beyond individual achievements; he embodies the spirit of cultural preservation combined with creative innovation—a testament to Yangzhou's rich artistic heritage. As he pursues new artistic endeavors, Lu Weihua remains steadfast in his dedication to honoring tradition while pushing the boundaries of botanical painting, ensuring that Yangzhou embroidery continues to inspire generations to come.

A Jewel on the Yangtze: Exploring the Yangzhou Museum

Nestled along the serene banks of Bright Moon Lake in Yangzhou, a city steeped in centuries of history and artistic legacy, lies the Yangzhou Museum – a captivating testament to China’s rich cultural tapestry. More than just a repository of artifacts, it's an immersive journey through time, seamlessly blending contemporary design with traditional aesthetics. Established in 2005, yet rooted in the foundations of the ancient Tianning Temple, this modern marvel offers visitors a profound connection to Yangzhou’s pivotal role as a center for commerce, scholarship, and artistic innovation. The museum’s very location, adjacent to the China Block Printing Museum within the impressive Yangzhou Double Museum complex, immediately speaks to its dedication to preserving and celebrating vital aspects of Chinese heritage.

The heart of the museum's collection beats with an astonishing breadth, spanning from the Neolithic period through the Qing Dynasty. Walking through its seven meticulously curated exhibition halls is akin to traversing millennia – one encounters relics that whisper tales of emperors and artisans, scholars and soldiers alike. The sheer volume of treasures is remarkable: exquisite jade carvings, each a miniature masterpiece reflecting ancient beliefs and social hierarchies; delicate earthenware vessels, offering glimpses into daily life and culinary practices; and imposing bronze wares, bearing the marks of skilled craftsmanship and imperial patronage. However, it’s the museum's dedication to porcelain that truly shines, a direct reflection of Yangzhou’s historical significance as a key trading hub along the Grand Canal – a conduit for artistic exchange and economic prosperity. Beyond these tangible treasures, visitors are invited to contemplate the profound artistry of calligraphy and traditional paintings, deciphering not only their technical skill but also the philosophical underpinnings that informed their creation.

A particularly fascinating aspect of the museum is its unique partnership with the China Block Printing Museum. This collaboration underscores the enduring importance of this ancient printing technique in shaping Chinese culture and disseminating knowledge. Block printing, a precursor to modern typography, allowed for the mass production of texts and images, democratizing access to information and fostering artistic expression. The museum’s exhibits on block printing aren't merely displays; they are interactive explorations of the intricate process – from carving the blocks to applying ink and pressing the image onto paper. This dedication extends beyond block printing to encompass traditional paper-cut art and other folk traditions, ensuring that these vital elements of Chinese identity are passed down through generations. Furthermore, the museum’s representation of the “Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou,” a group of iconoclastic painters from the Qing Dynasty who challenged conventional artistic norms, offers a rare insight into a period of creative ferment and artistic rebellion.

A Modern Sanctuary: Architecture and Visitor Experience

The Yangzhou Museum is not simply a building housing artifacts; it’s an architectural statement in itself. Its modern design – characterized by expansive windows and a fluid layout – seamlessly integrates with the surrounding landscape, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere that belies its substantial size (covering 50,000 square meters). The strategic placement overlooking Bright Moon Lake dramatically enhances the visitor experience, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors and fostering a sense of tranquility. The spacious galleries are thoughtfully curated, allowing ample room to contemplate each artifact and appreciate its historical context. Interactive displays – incorporating digital projections and multimedia presentations – cater to visitors of all ages and backgrounds, making the museum accessible and engaging for both seasoned art enthusiasts and curious newcomers. The use of natural light and carefully considered spatial arrangements contributes significantly to a truly immersive experience.

Yangzhou: A City Steeped in History

To fully appreciate the significance of the Yangzhou Museum, one must understand the historical context of the city itself. For centuries, Yangzhou has been a vital crossroads of culture and commerce, attracting merchants, scholars, and artists from across China and beyond. Its strategic location on the Yangtze River and along the Grand Canal facilitated trade and exchange, fostering a cosmopolitan atmosphere that nurtured artistic innovation. From its origins as a fortress during the Spring and Autumn period to its role as a temporary capital during times of dynastic upheaval, Yangzhou has witnessed – and shaped – pivotal moments in Chinese history. The museum serves not only as a guardian of the city’s cultural heritage but also as a gateway to understanding the broader narrative of China's past. The legacy of this vibrant city is palpable within the museum’s walls, connecting visitors directly to its storied evolution.

    Notable Exhibitions and Ongoing Initiatives

While the entire collection merits exploration, certain exhibitions consistently draw significant attention. The “Yangzhou History Exhibition Hall” provides a comprehensive overview of the city's development across various dynasties, while the “Hall of Painting & Calligraphy by Eight Eccentric Artists” showcases the daring innovations of this influential group. The “National Treasure Hall” houses a selection of particularly prized artifacts, offering a glimpse into the museum’s most significant holdings. Furthermore, the museum actively engages in ongoing initiatives to preserve and promote intangible cultural heritage, including workshops on traditional paper-cutting and block printing techniques. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions that explore specific themes or artists, ensuring a dynamic and evolving experience for visitors.
