The Life and Art of Alida Withoos
Alida Withoos was a Dutch botanical artist and painter born in Amersfoort. As the daughter of the painter Matthias Withoos, she was trained by her father alongside her siblings to paint botanical illustrations and still lifes. While many members of the Withoos family were active in Hoorn as artists of flowers, birds, butterflies, and insects, Alida achieved a certain reputation painting under her own name, particularly for her botanical images.
Her career included significant commissions for major projects. She was one of the artists commissioned by Agnes Block to paint specimens at the estate known as Vijverhof. During her residency there, she painted the first pineapple bred in Europe in 1687. Additionally, she contributed thirteen watercolours to the Moninckx Atlas in 1694, a project for the Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam. Her work often utilized an "S-curve" stylistic decision within her illustrations.
