Born in 1882 in Ružomberok, Slovakia, his path took him from the study of law in Vienna, Budapest, and Bratislava to the fine arts academies of Vienna and Budapest. He moved between roles as a painter, restorer, art historian, and official. His early years were marked by travels supported by scholarships to Rome and Turkey in 1902.
