A Life of Observation
Joseph Petzl began his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, studying under Robert Langer from May 1821. His early years were marked by a steady movement through the cities of Europe. He spent time in Berlin under Carl Begas and lived in Dresden, where he shared circles with painters like Thomas Fearnley and Friedrich Bernhard Westphal. These connections shaped his eye for the world around him.
His travels took him through Nuremberg, Copenhagen, Kiel, and Düsseldorf before a significant period in Rome. The path through the Alps was difficult; during such a trip in 1832, his companion Vilhelm Bendz passed away in Vicenza. Petzl continued on to Naples and Greece, arriving in time for the celebrations of King Otto. In Naples, he found work teaching drawing to the daughters of Joseph Ludwig von Armansperg.
Shifting Perspectives
The subject matter of his work changed as his geography did. His earlier paintings focused on the rugged life of the Alps and Tyrol, capturing hunters, peasants, and bandits. After traveling to Istanbul in 1834, his focus shifted toward the folklore and daily customs of the Ottoman Empire. This transition brought a new set of scenes into his repertoire.
His drawings offer a quiet record of what he saw. They document everyday life, personal travels, and social interactions with a level of detail that captures the fashion and customs of the nineteenth century. Much of this collection now resides in the Münchner Stadtmuseum.
