The Artistic Evolution of Malle Leis
Malle Leis was an Estonian painter, printmaker, and theatre designer. Her creative journey began with formal education at the Tartu Art School and the Estonian Academy of Arts, where she graduated from the stage design department. As an original member of the ANK '64 group, she participated in an organization that held exhibitions outside the official system and organized private seminars on modern art.
In the early sixties, Leis preferred working in abstraction, but by the end of the decade, she developed an interest in pop art. Her work during this period often combined geometric forms with pop elements, such as in her 1968 oil and canvas piece, Exchange. Throughout her career, she worked with various mediums, including oil, watercolor, and serigraphs.
Technique and Subject Matter
During the 1970s and 1980s, Leis's work frequently featured large, bright flowers, vegetables, and occasionally horses or human figures. Her 1972 painting, Sunlight Triptych, depicts red poppies and yellow daffodils against a blue background. In her 1977 work, The Longest Day, she placed tulips across a black canvas alongside a human head.
A defining characteristic of her oeuvre was her unique silk screen technique. Developed with the help of her husband, this process involved using ten to twenty different colors in each print, creating works with oriental resemblances. Her art has been featured in numerous exhibitions and is held in various collections, including the Estonian Art Museum and the Library of Congress.
