His style drew from the realism of Caravaggio and his followers, but it was also shaped by the quiet precision of Juan Sánchez Cotán and the influence of polychrome sculpture. His work was influenced by the textures found in the paintings of Murillo and Titian, yet he maintained a hard-edged, solemn quality that suited his religious subjects. After Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán was the most significant painter of the Spanish Golden Age.
On view at In Madrid, Spain, the Prado Museum houses a version of his Agnus Dei, a work that captures the stark, heavy presence of the lamb.

Their relationship proved remarkably fruitful, with Snyders frequently tasked with painting the animals and still life elements within Rubens’ grand compositions. Beyond Rubens, Snyders collaborated with Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, and Abraham Janssens, demonstrating his versatility and adaptability. Snyders’ influence can also be seen in the Dutch Golden Age still life tradition, where artists like Willem Claeszoon Heda and Pieter Claesz embraced a similar focus on texture, light, and composition.

He found a counterpoint in the work of Salvator Rosa, whose dramatic landscapes and depictions of shipwrecks introduced an element of danger and emotional intensity that Lorrain lacked. He also drew inspiration from the Dutch masters of maritime painting, studying their techniques for rendering waves, clouds, and the effects of light on water. A View of the Port of Naples with Mount Vesuvius in the Background (1774), exemplifies this talent—the imposing presence of Vesuvius looms over the bustling port, a reminder of nature’s power while simultaneously highlighting human activity.
