The artistic influences on Achille Lauge are somewhat difficult to pinpoint with absolute certainty, as detailed records from his formative years remain scarce. Artists like Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet, who focused on rural life and landscapes, likely served as inspiration for Lauge’s subject matter and approach to painting. The burgeoning Impressionist movement also left its mark, though Lauge never fully embraced the radical techniques of Monet or Renoir.
He meticulously studied the works of artists like Gerard ter Borch and Gabriel Metsu, absorbing their techniques for depicting domestic interiors and everyday life. His initial success came with paintings exhibiting this influence, such as “The Pardon or Absolution” (1849).

William Brymner, born in Greenock, Scotland in 1855, stands as a pivotal figure in the development of Canadian art —a bridge between the established traditions of academic painting and the burgeoning currents of modernism. While mastering academic techniques, Brymner also became captivated by the detailed realism of Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier, a fascination evident in his early works’ meticulous attention to detail.
