This period of intense physical labour in the Canadian wilderness provided a stark contrast to the pastoral beauty of his native England, yet it may have instilled within him a deep-seated appreciation for the raw, unadorned beauty of nature and a sense of resilience that subtly informs the texture of his later works.
Upon his return to England, Waite transitioned from the rugged life of a woodsman to the dedicated life of a professional artist.
