      Early Life, Family and Training

Born Antonio Cánovas del Castillo y Vallejo on 22 December 1862 in Madrid, Spain, the man who would later be known as Kaulak grew up in the shadow of significant political weight. His uncle was the prominent politician Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, a figure whose life ended in assassination by an anarchist in 1897. This family connection prompted the use of a pseudonym, a choice that would follow him through his various pursuits.

His early years were defined by a dual focus on the structured and the creative. He pursued formal studies in Arts and Letters, yet he also became licensed in Law. This legal background provided a foundation of discipline that sat alongside his interest in the visual arts. He did not limit himself to a single discipline, moving between the logic of law and the observation required for art.

During his training, he studied painting under the tutelage of Carlos de Haes. It was during this period of practice with the painter that he began signing his works as Vascano. This name allowed him to navigate the art world under a different identity while he developed his technical skills and explored the nuances of light and form.

      Professional Career and Political Roles

Before the camera became his primary focus, he moved through the structured world of Spanish law and governance. He practiced as a lawyer and occupied several public offices, navigating the complexities of the state. His influence reached into the ministries of Interior and Justice, where he held high-ranking positions. In the early 1890s, he sat in the Cortes, representing the constituency of Cieza. His administrative reach extended to the province of Málaga, where he served briefly as Civil Governor.

This life of official duties and legislative debate eventually gave way to a different kind of public presence. He made his professional debut in the field of photography in 1899, entering the arena through a contest organized by the magazine La Ilustración Española y Americana. This transition marked a shift from the halls of government to the controlled light of the studio, though his previous standing in society likely influenced the circles he would later inhabit.

      Photography and Studio Activity

He moved away from the soft, blurred edges of pictorialism that defined much of the era. Instead, he focused on a purist approach to the portrait, seeking a clarity that earned him the nickname "the Spanish Nadar." His lens captured the faces of the Spanish upper class and members of the Royal Family, as well as political figures and writers. In 1904, he opened the Kaulak Studios on the Calle de Alcalá, a space that quickly became a destination for the social elite. He utilized the most modern machinery available to him, both inside the studio and during outdoor sessions, and he was careful to advertise these technical advantages to his clientele.

His influence extended beyond the studio walls and into the printed word. From 1901 to 1913, he directed the magazine La Fotografía, which acted as the official organ for the Real Sociedad Fotográfica. He also sought to codify the technical aspects of his craft, publishing a manual titled La fotografía moderna in 1912. This text, written under his real name, provided a compendium of the essential knowledge required by photographers of the time.

      Key Works and Artistic Output

His output shifted between the brush and the camera lens. Under the pseudonym Vascano, he produced oil paintings such as A Night at the Sea, created in 1888, and a River Landscape from about the beginning of the 20th century. These works show a different side of his hand than his photographic pursuits. In 1899, he premiered Los esparteros, a work that helped establish his presence in the photographic and engraving circles of the time.

The studio work often focused on the faces of the era. He captured many through a photographic positive titled Studio portrait from 1921-1922. Beyond individual portraits, he collaborated with Swiss-born photographers Adolfo Menet and Oscar Hauser to create a series of postcards. These small, reproducible images allowed his visual style to move beyond the walls of his Madrid studio.

Where to See the Works Today

His traces remain scattered across several institutions in Spain. You can find his pieces within the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo del Prado. These holdings reflect the different facets of his output, from his early paintings to his photographic work. A studio portrait from about 1921-1922 is held in the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid.

Beyond these specific museums, his photographic legacy is preserved in the Photography Collection. His presence in these archives shows the breadth of his interests, spanning from the formal portraits of the Spanish upper class to his earlier experiments in painting. The works held in these collections offer a way to see the man behind the various names he used throughout his life.

      Later Years and Death

The studio on Calle de Alcalá continued to function long after his passing. His family maintained the business, keeping the doors open through the years and into the late twentieth century. It remained in operation until 1989.

He died in Madrid at the age of seventy. His remains were interred at Saint Isidore Cemetery on 13 September 1933.
