The Life and Identity of Nicolas Becker
Nicolas Becker was a Russian artist whose life spanned much of the twentieth century. Born in 1877 in the Soviet Union, he lived through a period of immense global change. While much of his personal history remains quiet, his presence in the art world is marked by a specific window of activity. His professional career was most active between approximately 1922 and 1932, a time when his hand was seen on canvas in significant settings.
The traces of his life are found in the quiet dignity of his portraits. He moved through a world in transition, leaving behind works that captured the likenesses of the people of his era. His ability to translate a subject's character onto canvas allowed his work to find a permanent home in private collections and estates. Notable Portraiture and Commissions
Becker’s brush captured a significant moment in the life of the 5th Earl of Enniskillen. In 1922, he sat with John Henry Michael Cole to produce a three-quarter-length portrait that would eventually find its place within the Florence Court collection. The oil on canvas presents the Earl standing against a landscape, a setting that provides a sense of place and quiet dignity to the composition.
The details of the subject's attire reflect the formal manner of the era. Becker painted the Earl wearing a dark brown jacket paired with light brown trousers, complemented by a waistcoat, collar, and tie.
