      1870 - 1960

      Early Life and Artistic Training

Nikolai Root was born in Saint Petersburg on November 24, 1870. His early years in the city provided the foundation for a life spent navigating different cultures and artistic traditions. He eventually moved through the major European centers of learning, seeking to refine his technical skills and understand the nuances of light and form.

In 1895, he traveled to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. This period of training allowed him to absorb the atmosphere of the French art scene before he moved further into Europe. By 1897, his path led him to Munich, where he studied under Anton Ažbe. This time in Germany was a significant chapter in his development, helping him build the discipline required for a professional career in the arts.

His formal education reached a milestone in 1900 when he graduated from the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. This achievement marked the end of his student years and the beginning of his professional life as a painter. Following his graduation, he moved into teaching, a role that would define much of his later career as he shared his knowledge of drawing and ceramics with others.

      Life and Work in Estonia

After settling in Tallinn in 1919, Nikolai Root began a long chapter of his life within the Estonian capital. He became a citizen of Estonia in 1925, further rooting himself in the local community. His professional life was deeply tied to the instruction of others; he served as a teacher of theater decoration at the State Industrial Art School. This expertise in stagecraft translated into significant practical work, as he spent much of the period between 1924 and 1936 designing sets for the Russian Theatre in Tallinn. His influence also extended to the open-air sets for Paul Sepp and the ballet studio of Eugenia Litvinova and Galina Chernyavskaya.

Root was active in the cultural life of the city, often organizing ways for others to view art. In 1931, he arranged an exhibition of Russian art held at the Great Guildhall on Pikk Street. His interests also leaned toward the preservation of history and faith; in 1939, he founded a church museum located near the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Tallinn. He also spent time giving lectures on the lives and works of Russian artists. Following the disruptions of the war, he returned to Tallinn in 1945 and became a member of the Estonian Soviet Artists Association.

      Key Works and Output

Root’s creative output was deeply connected to the spaces where people gathered, whether in a quiet studio or a crowded theater. His work moved between the delicate touch of watercolor and the weight of oil on canvas. In 1920, he produced P. Tšaikovski pink Haapsalus, a watercolor on paper that captures a specific moment in time. His ability to design for the stage also allowed him to shape the visual atmosphere of the Russian Theatre in Tallinn between 1924 and 1936. This period of set design extended to the film Tšeka komissar Miroštšenko in 1925, where his work helped build the physical world of the screen.

As his career progressed, his paintings often turned toward the landscape and the self. In 1934, he painted Rannamaastik, an oil work that reflects his engagement with the natural surroundings of his life in Estonia. Later in his life, he turned his attention inward. His 1953 oil painting, Autoportree, offers a look at the man himself, painted in an oval format that focuses the viewer's attention on his presence.

      • P. Tšaikovski pink Haapsalus (1920)
      • Tšeka komissar Miroštšenko (1925)
      • Rannamaastik (1934)
      • Autoportree (1953)

Where to See the Works Today

Finding the traces of Nikolai Root's hand today requires looking toward the public collections of Estonia. His presence in these archives offers a way to connect with the quiet moments of his later years and his evolving perspective as a painter. Three specific works from his career have been preserved within Estonian public collections, ensuring that his visual language remains accessible to those studying the history of the region.

The Art Museum of Estonia and the Eesti Kunstimuuseum both hold important pieces that reflect his skill in different mediums. Within these institutions, one can find his oil painting titled Rannamaastik and his oil self-portrait, Autoportree. These works provide a glimpse into how he viewed both the landscape and himself as he moved through the mid-twentieth century.

Other pieces have found their way into private hands or specialized collections. For instance, the watercolour P. Tšaikovski pink Haapsalus is held by the Vernissage collection. These scattered pieces, from the formal museum settings to private holdings, allow his artistic output to be studied from various angles, preserving the memory of a man who spent so much of his life teaching and shaping the art scene in Tallinn.
