      1899 - 1995

      Early Life, Family and Training

Otto Herrmann was born on January 30, 1899, in Stuttgart, Germany. He spent his formative years in Feuerbach, a district of the city where his childhood and youth took shape. His early path was shaped by practical technical training rather than immediate artistic pursuit. In 1914, he began an apprenticeship as a photoengraver, a craft that would provide him with a foundational understanding of graphic reproduction and line work.

His formal artistic education began later, when he entered the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts. From 1920 to 1928, he dedicated himself to his studies, refining his skills under the guidance of several instructors. He learned his craft from Christian Landenberger, Christian Speyer, and Heinrich Altherr. These years of study provided the technical discipline that would support his later work as both a painter and a graphic artist.

      Professional Career and Artistic Style

Otto Herrmann established himself as a significant figure within the movement of Expressive Realism. His professional life was deeply intertwined with the world of print media and satire. Between 1930 and 1944, he contributed drawings to the satirical magazine Simplicissimus, a period that saw him working as a freelance painter and draftsman for several other notable publications, including Die Jugend, Eulenspiegel, and Roter Pfeffer. His ability to capture the human condition through line and form made him a frequent presence in these editorial circles.

The political climate of the era brought significant hardship to his career. In 1937, he was excluded from the Reichsverband der Deutschen Presse, a move that signaled the increasing pressure on artists during that time. His personal life was further disrupted in 1939 when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht. During the war years, his work took on a more functional character; from 1940 until the conflict ended, he was called back to work for the Gustav Dreher company in Stuttgart, where he produced work for a medical magazine.

      Key Works and Notable Series

In 1950, Herrmann achieved a significant level of recognition through his lithograph series titled Die Verdammten. This body of work was deeply influenced by the novel Stalingrad by Theodor Plivier. Through these prints, he sought to bring the profound degradation and loss experienced by individuals during the chaos of war into the public consciousness. His focus remained on the human condition amidst such devastation, a theme that often drew scrutiny from those who felt his depictions were too unflinching.

Beyond his heavy thematic explorations of conflict, his portfolio included varied subjects that captured the essence of the landscape and life. One such work is Southern Landscape with Animals and Persons, which remains part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich. This piece offers a glimpse into the different ways he approached composition and subject matter outside of his most intense social commentaries.

      Later Years, Death and Legacy

In the years following the war, Herrmann continued to find his place within the local art scene. He took part in the first exhibition of the Stuttgarter Sezession in 1947, marking a period of renewed activity. He remained a presence in Stuttgart until his death on May 18, 1995.

The preservation of his life's work became a priority for those closest to him. After he passed away, his wife, Maria Herrmann, established a foundation to ensure his artistic estate would be protected and documented. Today, the Otto & Maria Herrmann Foundation continues this work, focusing on the care and management of his remaining works and archives.

His connection to his roots remains visible in the geography of his home city. In 1998, a street named Otto-Herrmann-Weg was dedicated to him in the Stuttgart-Feuerbach district. This gesture serves as a quiet, permanent reminder of the man who spent his formative years in that same neighborhood.
