The Textured Legacy of Alan Reynolds

Alan Munro Reynolds (1926–2014) was a painter whose career traced a profound evolution from the tangible, sun-drenched landscapes of the British countryside to the enigmatic depths of pure abstraction. Born in Newmarket, Suffolk, into a world where his father worked as a stableman, Reynolds’ early life was rooted in the raw, physical reality of the English landscape. This connection to the earth would later manifest in his signature use of impasto, where thick, sculptural layers of paint allowed him to recreate not just the sight of a moor or a meadow, but its very weight and texture.
